If there’s one technology that impressed me the most this year, it has to be Intel’s Core i7 release. To this date I am still stunned by it’s performance. It’s so good that starting from Q1 2009, all test systems in the Guru3D lab will be Core i7 based until something better comes along. I’m that excited about the technology!
What’s a little less exciting is that Intel only has one chipset available for for the Core i7 series processors, making the upgrade pretty expensive. However, this is an enthusiast user product. Targeted Read the rest of this entry »

On November 17, Intel’s Nehalem processor will hit the market. This is a big leap in technology, and will be of interest to anyone contemplating the purchase of a high-end PC in the coming year.
ehalem” is the codename used during development; you’ll see it called “Core i7″ in product literature. The suite of Nehalem chips, which will be rolled out over the coming year, will have from 2 to 8 processors; the initial desktop PC chip will have 4. Due to Intel’s “hyperthreading” feature which lets each processor to serve double duty (sort of), it will appear that there are 8 processors instead of 4. In any case, this is a step up: In current (pre-Nehalem) computers, your basic desktop PC has 2 processors.
Anticipation for Intel’s latest CPU architecture rivals the intensity for the original Core 2 Duo. It’s not just that Nehalem is a new CPU architecture. Intel’s new CPU line also brings along with it a new system bus, new chipsets, and a new socket format. Read the rest of this entry »

Targeting photographers and cinematographers, the new Canon EOS 5D Mark II combines a full-frame CMOS sensor with
Full HD 1080p video recording.
Canon today introduced the Canon EOS 5D Mark II Digital SLR camera, the successor to the EOS 5D, introduced in 2005. Building upon the EOS 5D, Canon has coupled the creative power of a full-frame CMOS sensor in a relatively compact
body (6 by 4.5 by 3 inches, 28.6 ounces), together with Full HD video capture that opens the door to a much wider range of imaging possibilities for photographers.
Among the advancements in the Canon EOS 5D Mark II is the proprietary DIGIC 4 imaging processor that powers the camera’s
14-bit analog-to-digital conversion for smoother color tones and improved gradation. The Canon EOS 5D Mark II offers a full-frame 24 x 36mm, 21.1 megapixel CMOS sensor and continuous shooting at 3.9 fps for an unlimited number of full-resolution JPEGs to the capacity of the memory card or up to 14 RAW images in a single burst when using a UDMA CF card.
